Varithena® (polidocanol injectable foam) is a prescription medicine used to treat varicose veins caused by problems with the great saphenous vein (GSV) and other related veins in the leg’s GSV system. Varithena improves symptoms related to or caused by varicose veins, and the appearance of varicose veins.

What are the Benefits of Varithena vein treatment at Hamilton Vein Center?

  • Performed in our office
  • Relieves itching, burning, aching, swelling associated with vein disease
  • Typically takes very little time
  • Does not require incisions or local anesthesia
  • Minimal discomfort
  • Rapid return to normal activities

How is Varithena Performed?

  • Treatment with Varithena® is minimally invasive and nonsurgical (no incisions required)
  • The doctor usually numbs the injection site, but no additional anesthesia is required
  • The doctor administers a small amount of Varithena® through a catheter or by direct injection into the malfunctioning vein
  • It usually takes the doctor less than an hour to administer Varithena®
  • Following administration, the doctor applies bandages and compression stockings to the leg

What Can I Expect After My Varithena Vein Treatment?

Patients may resume most activities the same day as treatment. Heavy exercise should be avoided for one week. Post-treatment bandages need to be kept dry and in place for 48 hours, and compression stockings must be worn on the treated leg for 2 weeks. For a month, patients should walk at least 10 minutes a day and avoid long periods of inactivity. If you have received treatment with Varithena®, your doctor will give you additional instruction for post-treatment self care. Some patients receiving Varithena® only need a single treatment. Additional treatment may be needed, depending on the number and size of veins to be treated.

How Much Does Varithena Cost?

We would be happy to discuss all of your pricing and financing options at your initial consultation. Our dedicated team of insurance specialists will work with you to determine your eligibility for coverage.
