What is Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)?

Deep vein thrombosis is a serious condition in which a blood clot occurs deep within one of the veins in your body. While we typically see deep vein thrombosis, also known commonly as DVT, in the legs or thighs, these harmful blood clots can be found anywhere in the body under the right conditions. Because DVT can be so dangerous, we encourage all of our patients who are experiencing swelling in the feet, swelling in the legs, foot pain, leg pain, and burning sensations in the feet to get diagnostic testing for this condition at their earliest convenience.

What Causes Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)?

Most patients who suffer from DVT have recently undergone surgery, have experienced an injury, are taking blood-clotting medications, or lead a primarily sedentary and inactive lifestyle. Each of these four risk factors contributes to poor blood circulation throughout the body and promote the possibility of blood clotting. While there is no single factor that guarantees the cause of deep vein thrombosis, we encourage all of our patients who experience these risk factors to be more aware if they start to develop the signs and symptoms typically associated with DVT.
