What is May-Thurner Syndrome?
May-Thurner syndrome, also known popularly as iliac vein compression syndrome, is a condition that causes the left iliac vein to narrow due to compression put on it by the right iliac artery. These veins and arteries in the legs respectively carry blood back to the heart and deliver the same blood to the rest of the lower body. When this major artery rests on top of the left iliac vein, it can cause a blockage of blood flow that has the potential to lead to serious conditions like deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Patients may have May-Thurner syndrome if they are experiencing leg pain, edema and swelling in the legs, open sores and ulcers on the legs, and skin discoloration.
What Causes May-Thurner Syndrome?
May-Thurner syndrome is caused by the left iliac vein being compressed by the right iliac artery, preventing proper blood flow in the patient. Patients who are at a higher risk of developing May-Thurner syndrome are sedentary women who habitually use oral birth control pills and have either been pregnant or had children in the past. Each of these factors contributes to changes in the pelvic region that may cause the compression to occur.
