What is a Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)?

Radiofrequency ablation is one of the more advanced forms of treatment performed on patients who are suffering from varicose veins. This procedure involves using a small catheter to emit radiofrequency waves into the affected veins, which cuts off blood flow and relieves symptoms caused by varicose veins including heaviness, aching, and leg pain. Radiofrequency ablation is a minimally invasive treatment for patients with varicose veins and symptoms related to venous insufficiency who wish to relieve their symptoms for the long-term.

What are the Benefits of Getting a Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)?

There are many benefits of receiving a radiofrequency ablation at Hamilton Vascular, including:

  • Minimally invasive treatment
  • Takes less than three hours to complete
  • Relieves enlarged veins that fill with blood
  • Treats mild to moderate varicose veins
  • Minimal downtime and recovery period

What Can I Expect During My Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)?

Your radiofrequency ablation will be performed at your local Hamilton Vascular location by one of our board-certified vein specialists. Before your radiofrequency ablation begins, a local anesthetic may be applied to your treatment area to ensure you remain comfortable throughout your treatment. Once numb, your specialist will begin placing a small catheter into the affected veins. This catheter will then release radiofrequency technology that will block off the rest of the vein from further being used. The catheter will then be removed and pressure will be applied to the insertion site to stop any bleeding. The entire treatment process typically takes between one and three hours to complete.
