What are Spider Veins?

Spider veins are a frustrating problem for many of our patients. While they typically do not cause any discomfort, spider veins do cause thin, thread-like red or blue lines to appear along the skin. Also known as telangiectasia, spider veins occur when blood vessels widen and form clusters under the skin to create a signature web-like appearance. If you are unhappy with the appearance of your spider veins or are experiencing burning and itching around the area in which you have spider veins, we encourage you to come in and see one of our specialists in a private consultation.

What Causes Spider Veins?

The cause of your spider veins may be hard to determine as there are a variety of factors that may be included in their appearance. Spider veins can be hereditary, or caused by pregnancy, job or lifestyles which require long periods of standing or sitting. Spider veins can also be caused from underlying venous insufficiency.  Our vascular specialists can determine the cause of your spider veins and recommend the best treatment options.

What Spider Vein Treatments are Available?

  • Sclerotherapy

In sclerotherapy treatments, a series of microinjections of a solution (“sclerosant”) are administered directly into varicose veins or spider veins. The injected solution closes off veins with abnormal valves. Over time, the treated veins shrink and are eventually absorbed by your body. Blood flow naturally reroutes itself into healthy veins, improving circulation and eliminating the root cause, as well as the symptoms of vein disease.

Treatment may or may not involve ultrasound to either map your venous system for diagnosis or to provide a live view of your veins. Physicians usually utilize ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy to treat larger varicose veins. For smaller spider veins closer to the skin’s surface, ultrasound guidance is usually not necessary and visual inspection is sufficient.
