What are Varicose Veins on the Legs?
If you've started to notice your veins are becoming more visible on your legs and thighs, you're not alone. Varicose veins on the legs are characterized by a bulging blue or dark red appearance and are commonly found around the thighs and calves. These swollen veins are caused by the blood in your body not circulating the way it should and pooling in the veins, causing them to enlarge and widen. Varicose veins are typically found around the legs, but can also be found on the pelvis and testicles and are known to cause discomforts like a heavy feeling in the legs, leg discoloration, and leg hair loss.

What Causes Varicose Veins on the Legs?
Varicose veins are a common condition that's caused by the veins in the body not functioning properly. Veins typically carry blood throughout the body in a one-way system in which valves keep the blood from flowing in the wrong direction. When those valves are damaged or lose their strength, the blood flows back in the wrong direction and pools in the veins causing them to enlarge and swell. While varicose veins typically affect older patients whose bodies are naturally going through changes, patients may also experience varicose veins if they are pregnant, are in their first stages of menopause, are obese, or have a family history of vein disorders.
