Sclerotherapy Q & A

What is Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive treatment for spider veins and varicose veins. It’s an injected treatment with no incisions and it’s appropriate for use nearly anywhere that you have unwanted veins.

The team at Hamilton Vascular performs sclerotherapy on an outpatient basis.

Is Sclerotherapy Right for Me?

If you're dealing with either spider veins or varicose veins that cause any of the following symptoms, sclerotherapy could be right for you:

  • Itchiness
  • Burning
  • Aching
  • Swelling
  • Pain
  • Soreness

In addition to the physical symptoms, spider veins and varicose veins are often extremely embarrassing. You might feel too self-conscious about your veins to wear shorts or a bathing suit, and that's no way to live your life.

Sclerotherapy at Hamilton Vascular can relieve your symptoms and help you regain your confidence.

How Does Sclerotherapy Work?

During sclerotherapy, your Hamilton Vascular specialist injects a substance (the sclerosant) into the problem vein. The walls of your vein react by shrinking, leading to vein closure. Your body gradually absorbs the withered vein tissue until it vanishes from sight.

The entire treatment session takes anywhere from 5-30 minutes, depending on the number of veins being treated and how large the veins are.

What Can I Expect After Sclerotherapy?

Following your sclerotherapy session, the Hamilton Vascular team recommends that you wear a compression garment or elastic bandages around the treated area. This helps keep blood out of the vein as it fades away.

Depending on the type and size of the treated veins, you may need to wear this protection for anywhere from a couple of days to a few weeks. You can remove compression garments or elastic bandages to bathe or shower, but it's very important to consistently wear them to get optimal results.

There's no downtime after sclerotherapy and, in most cases, you can go back to your normal daily activities following the treatment.
